In a world with fast food restaurants at every corner and pre-packaged meals lining the shelves in the deli section of our grocery stores, we must remind ourselves to consider quality over convenience. It is easy to make poor choices in what we eat. Society is “Go! Go! Go!”, but what if we were to slow down and really pay attention to what we put in our bodies?
Where to start? Perhaps, focusing on superfoods is where to begin.
“Superfoods include foods with a dozen or more unique properties and constitute a specific set of foodstuffs, natural or medium processed with numerous nutrients.” [1]
Which Foods are Considered Superfoods?
There are many foods that fall into the “superfood” category. When making your grocery list, look for these:
Pomegranates
Blueberries
Raspberries
Walnuts
Sweet potatoes
Red Beans
Almonds
Broccoli
Spirulina
Kefir
Ginger
Honey
Benefits of Eating Superfoods
The food that we put in our bodies has a job. Sometimes we eat because we are bored or as a tool to socialize with family and friends. But your body’s systems don’t know that. The body is looking for the things that superfoods provide, such as:
Strengthening the immune system
Aiding in digestion
Reducing inflammation in the body
Reducing cancer risk
The old adage “You are what you eat,” holds true. If the only things you are putting in your body are foods with low nutritional profiles, your body cannot possibly work to its most significant potential. Superfoods are the fuel we need to fight off illness and wake up feeling our strongest. Digestive issues, such as bloating and digestion, can put a damper on your daily life.
We certainly cannot control everything in our lives, but controlling what we put in our bodies is something we can do! So, add some of the above superfoods to your grocery list and watch as your energy levels and overall health get a giant leg up.
Superfoods are for those looking not only to survive but also to thrive!
